This is the problem with the water jugs from the movie Die Hard with a Vengeance I believe.

There are two jugs, one a 3 Litre the other a 5 Litre. The problem is to work out a way of obtaining exactly 4 Litres in the 5 Litre Jug.

    How can it be so?

P.S. Easy I know, but some people may not have seen the movie or really thought about it.

    ok...
you fill up the 3 and pour it in the 5

the 5 now has 3 in it

fill up the three again and pour as much as you can in it then the 5 has 5 in it. and the three has one. pour out all teh water in the 5 and add the one from the 3. then fill the 3 up again and pour 3 in then 5 = 4

    Solution #2:

Fill the 3 jug from the 5 jug, leaving 2 gallons in the 5 jug.

Empty the 3 jug and pour the 2 gallons from the 5 jug into the 3 jug. The 3 jug now has 2 gallons.

    Refill the 5 jug.

Fill the 3 jug from the 5 jug, leaving 4 gallons in the 5 jug.
